November 1st

Welcome! This is my new series of articles about random, important, or famous people who either were born or died on a certain day. Each article will include two people–one person who was born on that day in history and one person that died on that day in history. I will include “mini-biographies” for each person: who they are and what they did. These articles will typically come out once every month, with random months and days each time.

Yuko Shimizu –

Yuko was born November 1st, 1946 in Kyoto, Japan. After graduating from Musashino Art University, she created Hello Kitty in 1974 at Sanrio (a Japanese company). She left Sanrio in 1976 to get married and has been working as a freelance designer ever since. She ended up not making a lot of money from Hello Kitty. Yuko has made other characters, including Angel Cat Sugar and Rebecca Bonbon. She also published some books. Yuko is still alive, and currently 74.

Shannon Tavarez –

Shannon was a child actress and singer. In the Broadway theatre production of The Lion King, Shannon played young Nala. A few months after her 2009 September debut in The Lion King,  she had to leave the show because of acute myeloid leukemia. Because of her Dominican ethnic backgrounds, she had a hard time finding a bone marrow donor. Alicia Keys, Rhianna, and 50 Cent recruited prospective donors from among their fans to help Shannon find a donor. Her former co-stars from The Lion King helped her by selling “Shine for Shannon” keychains and bracelets to raise money for Shannon’s mom to pay for the medical bills. Shannon died November 1st, 2010 at the age of 11. Her mother said that “Shannon’s dream was to perform on stage, and that she did.”
