With the end of the football season comes America’s National pastime: Baseball! Like football, baseball has two teams, the team “at bat” and the team “at field”. Both teams have nine players at a time. In the field there are four bases: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and home plate. On the field, there’s a pitcher, a catcher, a first baseman, a second baseman, a third baseman, a shortstop, a left fielder, a right fielder, and an outfielder.
The team at bat is just a line of batters. After everyone is ready, the pitcher throws the ball to the batter, and the batter must hit the ball with the bat. If he doesn’t, then if it’s close to the ball, it’s a strike, otherwise, it’s a ball. If he swings and misses, it’s also a strike. Then, the pitcher pitches again. if there are three strikes, the batter is out. If the batter hits it and a fielder catches it, he’s also out. If he hits it outside of a certain line, it’s called a foul ball. A foul ball is treated like a strike, except you can’t get out on a foul. If he hits it and nobody catches it, then he can try to score points. First, he goes to first. Then he goes to 2nd, then 3rd, then back home for the point. Then, he stops running and goes to the back of the line.
However, a fielder can pick up the ball and throw it around. If the ball makes contact with the batter, he’s out. If the ball beats him to first, he’s out. If he gets four balls, he gets to automatically walk to first base. After he stops on a base, it’s the next batter’s turn. As soon as the ball is pitched, any other runners can make a run for it. If it’s a strike or a ball, he can walk back. If it’s a caught out or a foul, he needs to make it back before somebody throws it to the base he was at, which would make him out. Otherwise, he goes to the next base.
Only one player can be on a base at a time. If two people are on one base, a fielder can tag one of them out. Remember, the batter has to go to first. After three outs, the two teams switch places, now the team who was at field can score points, When the teams have gone back to their starting position, an inning has passed. A standard baseball game lasts for nine innings. Whoever has the most points wins.
Take me out to the ball game, take me out to the stands, buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks, I don't know if I'll ever go back, cause it's root root root for the home team, if they don't win it's a shame, for it's 1-2-3 strikes you're out in the old ball game.
That is one of the most well-known baseball songs. Like most stuff, baseball has it's own culture, movies, and stories.
Pennsylvania has two baseball teams, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Philadelphia Phillies. They’re both decent too. There is a World Series, even though it is only for the U.S and Canada. It is a best out of seven. How cool is that?! Unlike football, I don’t really follow baseball, so all I can tell you is that the Los Angeles Dodgers won last year’s World Series.
