Approximately 7.6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, approximately 3.9 million are dogs and 3.4 million are cats.
Each year, approximately 2.7 million animals are euthanized (put down).
PETA’s stance on pit bulls is consistent with our support for a ban on breeding all dogs and all cats as long as animals in shelters are literally dying for a good home. But more than any other breed, pit bulls are in crisis and need help right now. Urgently. They face systemic, relentless abuse and neglect.
If you want to help an animal shelter, I think you should volunteer.
If you are going to get an animal, please go to a local animal shelter and adopt the pet most in need.
